Artist Statement I love New Orleans. For the past seventeen years, I have spent much of my life painting about the city’s rich culture and I am proud to be apart of its unique community. From the moment I arrived, as if a seed planted is fresh soil, the city nourished and gave me a sense of being. I am thrilled to be invited to do this piece for the 2010 Old Algiers RiverFest™ as part of its fundraising efforts to give back to the community. The RiverFest committee asked me to convey the history of Algiers and to tell a story of its contribution to jazz, as we know it today. I thought about our ancestors and our lineage, the Gumbo, the mix, and all that is uniquely New Orleans. To the locals, “The Holy Trinity” as in our religion, our food, our people, and our music all of these combined is the culture of New Orleans. I am happy to be a part of the 2010 Old Algiers RiverFest™, Margaret Slade Kelley |
